Type Locality and Naming

The Nilekehe Rock Series was proposed by the past Soviet 13th Party of Aerial Geological Survey during 1952-1953 and published by the Compiling Group of Regional Stratigraphical Scale of the Xinjiang Uygur Zizhiqu in 1981. No type section was indicated.

Synonym: (尼勒克河组) ; Nilekehe Fm


Lithology and Thickness

It is dominated by gray, grayish black thick-bedded to massive siltstone and carbonaceous pelitic shale. About 250 m in thickness

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The lower and upper boundaries of the formation are unclear. Regionally, the next older unit is the Hudukedaban Fm of late Ordovician.

Upper contact

The lower and upper boundaries of the formation are unclear. Regionally, the next younger unit is the Jebki Fm of mid-Silurian.

Regional extent

The formation is, as so far known, exposed merely in the upper reaches of Nilka River in Nilka County in the central Tianshan Mts. area of Xinjiang.
